Phil Burtis


President


Phil is a 40+ year resident of Huntington Beach and has been a volunteer with the Huntington Beach Fire Department CERT program since 1992. Phil has a BSEE in electrical engineering from Iowa State University and worked at the Huntington Beach McDonnell-Douglas facility as a guidance, control and navigation engineer for a decade. Since leaving aerospace he has spent the last 20+ years developing software that models natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods. He serves as a Commissioner on the Huntington Beach Jet Noise Commission, is the Treasurer for the Huntington Beach Council on Aging, and is currently a Professor of Computer Science at Concordia University in Irvine, CA. Phil is also a ham radio operator KF6NFA.


Phil enjoys travel and sports as does his lovely wife Carol and son Justin, who is currently a Sports Information Director at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA.

Shawn Wood

Shawn Wood is a valued Huntington Beach citizen who has a devotion for his family, his business, and his community. He is a graduate from University Of California Davis, with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology of Organizational Studies, Shawn also holds a degree in Community and Regional Development and an alumnus from the Sacramento Entrepreneurship Academy. Post graduation, Shawn accrued sales experience in the action sports industry working for Red Bull, Volcom and Electric Visual where he won several national sales contests. 

 

Shawn then applied his sales and entrepreneurial skills to start his own moving company, which has evolved into the successful corporation that continues to thrive today. Shawn has turned his passion towards giving back to his home community of Huntington Beach. Shawn was the President of Kiwanis in Huntington Beach 2021-2022, a volunteer organization that devotes its efforts to supporting the youth in local communities. Shawn is currently the Lieutenant Governor for Division 4 for Kiwanis California-Nevada-Hawaii region. Shawn is also on the board of directors for Kiwanis, Kindervision, HB Woman of the Year, Blessing of the Waves, and volunteers time on the Huntington Beach Boys and Girls Club Auction Committee. Shawn has received a Certificate of Recognition from County of Orange, United States Congress, The City of Huntington Beach, and Department of the Army for appreciation and outstanding support to the community. Shawn was also valedictorian for the Huntington Beach Robert Mayer Leadership Academy. 

 

Shawn was recently awarded 20 under 40 Successful Alumni from University of California Davis Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation, and sits of the School Site Council for Ocean View and graduated from Huntington Beach Citizen Academy.

 

When not working on his business or charitable activities, Shawn enjoys traveling and spending time with his family. He and his wife, Jenna, are proud parents of three young children.


Bill Reardon

Bill grew up in Connecticut and joined the Marine Corps after high school as a Firefighter in 1977. After his service time, he attended college and worked for several fire agencies before coming to the Huntington Beach Fire Department in 1990. Bill held multiple positions eventually serving as Division Chief/Fire Marshal for the last 12 years of his Fire Service career. Since retiring from the City, he has worked as a Fire Risk Advisor in the Oil and Gas Industry. As a proud father of three adult children, Bill has been delighted to be a resident of Huntington Beach for over 35 years. In his children’s earlier years, Bill consistently volunteered for numerous activities with Pop Warner Football/Cheer, Little League Baseball, Cub Scouts, Brownies, Indian Princes’ and school events just to mention a few. Bill holds a MPA from CA State University Long Beach and a BA in Fire Protection Administration from CA State University Los Angeles. He is a CA Certified Chief Fire Officer, Fire Prevention Officer, and is also a graduate of the Leadership Programs of the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce and California State University Fullerton. His hobbies include home improvement and golf.

Leo Betancourt is a tenacious, driven, and successful individual with years of experience in the Real Estate industry. Initially licensed as a real estate salesperson in 1998, Leo quickly became a top producing agent for the local Huntington Beach RE/MAX office where he's lived since 2001. In 2004 he obtained his broker license and opened his boutique real estate company in order to employ his colleagues that he had helped over the years. In 2010, he converted his company to RE/MAX TERRASOL in order to provide more marketing, tools, resources, brand awareness to his exclusive clientele and that of his agent’s. Since opening under the RE/MAX brand, Leo has grown his company to 125 agents with 5 office locations throughout Orange County and was named “Brokerage of Year” in 2016 by RE/MAX, LLC for the California/Hawaii region. This accomplishment is something that he takes a lot of pride in achieving.


Leo has been involved in giving back his entire adult life in one form or another. Whether it be building a home with other volunteers in the Huntington Beach community for Habitat for Humanity, Chairing the Education Committee for the Women's Council of Realtors or helping raise over $40,000 a year each year through his Realtor For Kids Charity Golf Classic event benefiting CHOC Hospital in the city of Orange. He is extremely excited to be a part of the HBFOF organization where he will continue giving back to those residents that need it most.

Taryn Hansen


Board Member


Taryn Hansen is a local small business owner with a career in health science, fitness and nutrition. 

Her charitable career started almost a decade ago when she joined forces with Huntington Beach Kiwanis and LA/OC Make A Wish Foundation.   Taryn was President of the Huntington Beach Kiwanis in 2019-2020 where she led her club into a virtual platform due to the uncertain pandemic. 


Over many years serving on various boards and chairing various fundraisers she has continued to make space for giving back and bringing organizations into the present trends and up to current social awareness. 

 

Taryn is an alumni of the Robert Mayer Leadership Academy and recipient of a Walter Zeller Fellowship award. 

 

Her passion for this board is to bring the science of exercise to the continued better health and wellness of the HBFD while helping to promote the mission in the community through social media.

Dr. Van Vu


Board Member


Dr. Van Vu grew up in Seattle and received his bachelor and medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He went on to USC to complete his anesthesiology training. After finishing his specialty pain management fellowship, he was recruited by Huntington Beach Hospital to open its first pain management center in 1995. He is a board certified pain specialist, founder and owner of California Pain Center in Fountain Valley. Utilizing his medical expertise, he is also a co-owner of TS Cosmetic Labs, inc., a manufacturer of nail, beauty, health, and cleaning solutions supply company in Stanton CA.


He is constantly trying to better his community via participation. Dr. Vu served as VP for OC Lions Club and Vietnamese Physicians Association of CA, Board of Directors for HB Community Clinic and American Cancer Society. In April 2022 he took over as current President (2021-22) as well as (2022-2023) for HB Kiwanis club. He also has been voted in as the Lieutenant Governor for Division 4 (2023-2024) for Cal-Nev-Ha District Kiwanis. Dr. Vu also serves as a Commissioner for the City of Huntington Beach Harbour Commission. His other civic activities includes serving as a board member for the City of HB Fire Outreach Foundation and Miss Fountain Valley Competition.


Since 1995, Dr. Vu has lived in Huntington Beach with his wife and four children. Dr. Vu is committed to the well being of his children and spends most of his free time participating in their education and extra-curricular activities. He has been an AYSO volunteer coach, a financial supporter and league leader for all of his children’s sports teams and artistic endeavors. In his spare time he enjoys cycling and working on his wine collection.



Bill Reardon

Jason’s family moved to Huntington Beach in 1981 from Ohio. He attended Huntington Beach Highschool and graduated from UC San Diego in 1997. He started his financial planning business in Irvine and moved it permanently to Huntington Beach in 2002.  In 2017, he co-founded Weaver Consulting Group after 20 years developing a thriving practice with Ameriprise Financial. He gained success early in his career, quickly ranking among the top 1% of over 11,000 advisors. In 2016, he was one of the top 400 financial advisors in the U.S. by Financial Times. From 2019 to present, Jason has been recognized on the Forbes Best-In-State Advisors list. Jason has served on various local charity event boards and has been an active member and board member of Entrepreneurs’ Organization of Orange County since 2010.

 

Jason currently lives in Huntington Beach, along with his wife Shannon and their children, Colin & Haley. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf and tennis .


Scott Haberle

Chief Haberle has a strong track record of effective citywide collaboration resulting in enhanced emergency service delivery and conservative fiscal management. His balanced fire service career has given him a wide variety of experience in emergency operations, community disaster preparedness, emergency medical services, community risk reduction, and fire prevention. Of note, Chief Haberle earned the Executive Fire Officer certification from the National Fire Academy, which is one of the highest designations for fire executives.


With nearly 200 full-time personnel and 150 seasonal lifeguards, Chief Haberle is responsible for managing eight fire stations, a Marine Safety division, and an annual operating budget of approximately $50 million.


Previously, in addition to serving as Fire Chief for the City of Monterey Park, Chief Haberle also served the City of Monrovia as a Firefighter, Fire Inspector/Fire Investigator, Paramedic, Fire Captain, Fire Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal, and Deputy Fire Chief. He holds an Associate’s Degree from Rio Hondo College; a Bachelor’s Degree from California State University, Long Beach; a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from University of La Verne; and the Executive Fire Officer certification from the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.


Chief Haberle and his wife Cathy have been married for 23 years and have three teenage children. They enjoy spending time together attending school and sporting activities.

Marty Ortiz is a dedicated and seasoned professional with an impressive 30-year tenure in the fire service. Currently serving as the Division Chief of Professional Standards, Marty's journey has been marked by a diverse range of roles within the department, from firefighter and paramedic to a hazardous materials specialist, fire prevention officer, US&R team member, Fire Captain, and Battalion Chief.


Throughout his career, Marty's strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships have been pivotal in his success. Actively participating in multiple fire department boards and committees, Marty's insights have significantly contributed to improving departmental resources and operations.


Beyond his professional accomplishments, Marty's commitment to community service is evident through his decade-long chairmanship of the fire association's charity golf tournament, raising over 1 million dollars for local charities. With a Bachelor's degree in Fire Administration and a certificate in Occupational Safety and Health, Marty combines his practical experience with a solid educational foundation, staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in his field.


As an Ex-Officio member on the foundation, Marty Ortiz brings invaluable expertise and passion for community service, making him an invaluable asset to the foundation's mission. His dedication to family life, celebrating 25 years of marriage with his wife Rikki, and being a proud parent to two adult children, Cade and Shelbi, adds to his balanced and fulfilling life.

Roger has been a proud resident of Huntington Beach since 1978 and has been closely connected to the community for the past 25 years. He is a retired pastor who has served as the Chaplain of the HB Police Department for 21 years and the Chaplain of the HB Fire Department for 16 years. Roger has been married to his beautiful wife Peggy for 37 years and they have three adult children, Sean, Nathan and Alexandra. He graduated from Cleveland State University with a double major in Business and Chemistry, and then went on for his MBA. He has held senior management positions at Hughes Aircraft, Continental Airlines and Coopers & LyBrand before opening his own consulting firm which he was President of for 15 years. Roger has served on numerous Boards, both in a Director and Advisory capacity. He currently enjoys time with his family, traveling, reading, and serving our wonderful Huntington Beach community.
